How can we integrate migrants into institutions of higher education?
This question was the starting point of a roundtable discussion on the occasion of the visit of Mrs. Svenja Schulze, Minister of Innovation, Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Minister and her delegation visited the FES Israel office on May 17th to meet with Israeli representatives of universities, politics and civil society and discuss the topic of integration.
Daniel Ben Simon, journalist and author of the book “The Moroccans” opened the roundtable and spoke about his personal experience as a Moroccan immigrant to Israel. Ksenia Svetlova, Member of Knesset, also reported from her personal perspective about the difficulties of immigrants from the former USSR in the Israeli society. Additional input was provided by members of the Israel Student Authority who act at the interface between migrants and Israeli universities and by representatives of Olim Beyahad who work for a successful integration of Ethiopian immigrants into the labor market.
