Gender Justice

Shared Life Event Young Naamat - International Day of Labor, Poetry Slam, Taibeh, May 2017

The situation of women in Israel has improved gradually over the past years, but nevertheless, the gender gap between men and women remains large.

Israeli civil society is dominated by men and the military. In addition religious conservatism plays a significant role in both Jewish and Arab societies in the country. This has a strong impact on the status of men and women. Gender inequality is manifested in the Israeli labor market, politics, society and the media. Gender segregation in employment is high in Israel and is narrowing at an extremely slow pace. Although women have been acquiring higher education at an increasing rate and are better educated than men, their situation in the labor market has not changed: women’s gross hourly wage is still significantly lower than men’s, and there are almost twice as many women than men employed in part-time jobs. In fact women’s achievements in the education arena do not necessarily translate into better positions in the labor market or into greater influence in the power domain.

In the face of conflict and war, gender issues are often neglected in the public discourse. We regard it as part of our role to not only support activities which contribute to the empowerment of women and to the bettering of their status in Israel, but also to take action in order to raise the awareness for gender inequality and the necessity to minimize it.

To this end we cooperate with a number of organizations in Israel. Together with our partners we maintain a variety of activities including leadership courses and seminars for women from different segments of society, conferences, research and publications.
