The Resumption of Direct Talks between Israelis and Palestinians in September 2010

Israel Debates is released as online publication of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Israel. Each edition presents opinions of two authors who express controversial views about major events of Israeli interior or foreign politics. The present publication of Israel Debates presents the Israeli domestic discussion on the Resumption of Direct Talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Dr. Yossi Beilin, former chairman of the Meretz party and key architect of the Geneva Initiative, arrives at the conclusion that the desired goal – a solution for peace within the frame of one year – is not attainable under the current political leadership.

Prof. Efraim Inbar of Bar-Ilan University also expressed scepticism regarding the outcome of the recently resumed direct peace talks. He notes that the Obama administration in particular placed tangible progress in the Middle East peace process high on both its domestic and foreign policy agendas.

September 2010.
