The Raid on the Gaza Flotilla – Controversial Debates in Israel and Increasing International Isolation

Israel Debates is released as online publication of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Israel. Each edition presents opinions of two authors who express controversial views about major events of Israeli interior or foreign politics. The present publication of Israel Debates presents the Israeli domestic discussion on the Raid on the Gaza Flotilla and the Increasing International Isolation.

In his analysis, Dr. Reuven Pedatzur, senior lecturer at Netanya Academic College, defines the failure of Israel’s blockade politics in the Gaza Strip and towards Hamas as point of departure for his political assessment of the events with regard to the Gaza flotilla. He sees Israel’s worldwide reputation heavily damaged because of the consistently disproportionate deployment of its military power not even sparing the civil population.

Prof. Dan Shiftan, professor for political science at the Haifa University, considers the event to be a purposeful provocation by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan with the help of a radical, partially terrorist organization.

August 2010.
